Satellite Radio 1980
Satellite radio started with a small transmitter
in the "Staatsliedenbuurt (J.M. Kemperstraat)" somewhere in Amsterdam.
The frequency was 91.2 FM.
with DJ,s as Rocky van der Burg, Clyde Jones,
Eugène de Bruin, Jimmy Moerlie, Roberto Miller. Later on a much
higher mast was placed on "the Wittenkade" and supported with a more juicy
amplifier. In the night we shared our transmitter and frequency with W.A.P.S.(Wave
Amsterdam Power Sound) with DJ,s like Barry Pitch ( Jan Lochtenberg ) and
Edit den Doosch with their famous program "Wipp express", the imported
records came from Rhythm Import in that period.

Satellite Empire
In 1982 we restarted Satellite in Amsterdam renamed
it " Satellite Empire ", my DJ name was Mark Brown, Roberto Miller was
the other funkateer, it was the first radiostation that broadcasted heavy
funk tracks, including P-funk (Parliament, Funkadelic, Bootsy Collins,
George Clinton) and C-funk (The Cameo sound). Besides the funk, dance was
the other direction, the other DJ,s were more playing dance. Some
new DJ,s joint the station, "Sugarfly", Bobby Broom, "All Star Fresh",
Pablo La Costa, Dick"Spacey" Macey, Murphy Dekker, Glenn Smith and more......

We were not afraid to broadcast the latest disco
dance funk 12" singles without listening to other radiostations and
we were not influenced by any chart, the popularity of Satellite Empire
was at his maximum when we put our transmitter on a building with a tower
from approximately 300 feet (90 meter) (see
picture). I searched for this building, this building was right in
the heart of Amsterdam, the transmitter was strong enough and placed on
this height so that it was possible to receive us 24 hours a day
in The Netherlands. Our frequency was 104.8 FM. In that period most
FM radiostations were transmitting from 90.0 till 100.0 FM, we choose to
transmit on a completely free frequency. If you look at the picture of
this building you can see that it looks a little bit like the Empire State
building. Before the transmitter was placed on this building the name of
our station was called "Satellite".
Now you know how we made up our name "Satellite
Empire".
The first legendary rap commercial " Go to
Attalos cause he,s the record boss" is something that a lot of listeners
from that period still remember and all the other legendary jingles: "Back
in town to funk on down" "The Empire strikes back" The "Ton sur Ton"
rap commercial, etcetera.
Roberto Miller and Mark Brown made this jingles
and rap,s. The Attalos top 50 and the Attalos rap were a hugh success and
a lot of club hits were born at this legendary funk & dance radiostation.
The top of the hour was followed by the "Funksensation", we are searching
for some tapes with jingles
so we can put them here on the site, so ASAP
you can download them....................

Empire Disco Action
A few years later we fused with Disco Action,
an other famous dancestation in Amsterdam. The fusion with Disco Action
lead to a new name: Satellite Empire Disco Action. In the past we had respect
for each other because we were both illegal dance radiostations and the
times were becoming hard. Also a few DJ,s from Decibel radio joined us.
Most illegal stations were round up during 1985 in Amsterdam. In that period
we tried to be successful for one more time and I searched for another
location for putting our transmitter. The result you can see on the picture
and newspaper article below. It was a 514 feet (180 meter) high tower.
It took months of preparation to install the transmitter, also it was a
highly secured area where the Mobil oil was located. With a helicopter
our transmitter was finally located after some time. We tried it a second
time but finally this was the end of Satellite Empire Disco Action.

Piraat Satellite Empire
weer uit toren gehaald.
Van onze verslaggevers AMSTERDAM, dinsdag
Gisterochtend heeft
de Radio Controle Dienst met behulp van
een helicopter
de zendapparatuur van de piraat Satellite Empire
verwijderd.
mogelijk was, ongezien
het zwaarbewaakte terrein en de toren
te betreden.
Al eerder werd een
krachtige zender verwijderd vanaf de monumen-
tale toren van het
ex-Telegraaf gebouw aan de Nieuwezijdsvoorburg-
wal, deze toren was
blijkbaar de piraat Satellite Empire niet hoog
genoeg.

Supperclub
Nowadays we love to listen to the Supperclub
compilations, some of the music on these compilations was something where
we dreamed about twenty years ago. That is when I started to create my
own music and experimented to combine jazz with house. We are not surprised
that the latest house lounge directions moves back to the period where
it all started: the funky jazzy grooves of the early 80", s, if we
listen to for example the 12" inch single "Sinnamon, Thanks to You"
(instrumental B-side) and we let it push at 126 BPM, it still will
surprise the people on the dance floor, a real floor filler! So nothing
is new, it is just a matter of experience and the right people at the right
moment on the dancefloor with the right DJ "searching to find the one".
